CANISIUS COLLEGE ATHLETICS

For the second-consecutive game the Canisius pitching staff limited Iona to under five hits, as starter Zachary Sloan yielded just two, and four total base runners, as the Blue and Gold bested Iona, 3-0. The Griffs staff as a whole limited Iona to just four hits total in the game as the squad completed the series sweep. With the win Canisius improved to 29-18 overall and 12-6 in conference action, while Iona dropped to 17-21 overall and 10-8 in MAAC action.

Sloan’s solid effort paid off for the senior hurler as he improved to 4-2 on the season, allowing just two hits, two walks and fanning five in the victory. Michael Ginther came on and retired a pair of batters, and Andrew Kneussle closed out the inning with the final out.

Tyler Smith earned his 10th save of the season working through a rocky final frame, allowing a pair of hits but also notched a pair of strikeouts to close out the Canisius victory.

Offense for both teams was hard to come by as the Griffs finished the game with four hits, while the Gaels also had four.

A pair of those hits came from Brett Migliore who led the team with a pair of knocks in four at-bats. Jake Lumley had a decisive RBI single in the top of the seventh, as he brought in Stephen Bennett to make it 2-0.

Returning to action after being out due to injury was Gage Lanning who scored the Griffs first run thanks to a wild pitch. He was 1-of-3 from the dish before being lifted in favor of Cyrus Senior on the base paths.

The Blue and Gold now finish out the regular season at home the final two weeks, playing Manhattan in a MAAC series next weekend, and Nigara in the final week of the season on Thursday and Friday. Game times against the Jaspers are both noon, with the doubleheader next Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
