CANISIUS COLLEGE ATHLETICS

The Canisius outdoor track team heads to Rider University this weekend for the 2017 MAAC Outdoor Track Championships beginning Saturday afternoon at 2:15 p.m.

Last week the Griffs took part in both the Penn Relays and the UB Invitational, with senior Brennan Root highlighting the events, breaking a school record in the men’s 3K steeple event.

The Golden Griffins have found success during the outdoor campaign, breaking four school records at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic, while gaining four first-place finishes, four stadium records and one school record from the NAZ/ROC City Classic.

At Bucknell, sophomore Siobhan Quinn broke a 26-year-old record held by former Griff Heather Whalen in the women’s 5k event, while junior Carlin Sullivan broke a 27-year-old record held by Whalen in the 3k event.

From the NAZ/ROC City Classic, Root had a first-place finish in the men’s 3K steeple event (9:17.01), setting a Golden Flyer Stadium record, while senior Cooper Roach became the second member of the Blue and Gold to break a stadium record on the day, winning the 1500 meter event.
The two-day Championship event will run through Sunday, with day two of competition beginning at Noon.

Where They Rank
• Roach has the fastest 1500-meter time (3:46.49), third highest 800-meter (1:52.69) and 3k steeple (9:14.62) times, as well as the fifth highest 5K time (14:28.96) in the MAAC this season.
• Root has the second fastest 3k steeple time in the MAAC this year.
• Quinn recorded the second fastest 5K time in the conference at Bucknell.

Head Coach Nate Huckle’s Preview
“We’re looking forward to traveling down there with the other teams. We’re kind of isolated up her in Western New York, so it’s great to go down and face some MAAC Competition.”

“Running in the Bucknell Invite and the Penn Relays (our runners) have competed at a high level this year and have gotten some great racing opportunities. Last week running at UB kept us local and kept us healthy, if you’re not traveling as much it’s not as difficult on the student athletes.”

“We’re looking to get some personal best times and some season best performances. Our senior class is my first full class that’s gone through, and they will be experiencing their fourth MAAC Championship. They’ve been to as many outdoor championships as we’ve had since reincarnating the program. They really know the ropes, they know the Rider track and what this experience is like. I’m going to lean on them to help some of the younger athletes to reach their full potential.”
