The Canisius women’s lacrosse team remains perfect in MAAC play, after defeating Quinnipiac 22-4 Saturday afternoon from the Demske Sports Complex. With the win, the Griffs move to 11-4 overall and have a 6-0 record in MAAC play.
Junior Lauren Smolensky led the Blue and Gold with seven points, on seven assists, while fellow juniors Erica Evans and Jen Reininger had a game-high four goals apiece.
The Bobcats were the first to find the back of the net for the day, taking a 1-0 lead at 25:55 of the first, but the Golden Griffins used an 11-0 run to take a commanding 11-1 lead with 10:40 remaining in the first half of action.
Scoring over the Griffs dominating stretch were senior Ashley Bull, sophomore Tessa Chad, Evans (3), Reininger (3), sophomores Jourdan Roemer, sophomore Brenna Shanahan and junior Allie Stewart.
Quinnipiac would score its second goal of the day at 7:44, before the Blue and Gold went on another run, scoring the final four goals of the first half, for a 15-2 lead at the break.
Freshman Emma Mryglod was one of four Griffs to score during the waning minutes (along with Bull, Chad and Stewart), tallying the first goal of her young career.
Canisius would go on to score five unanswered goals over the first 19:49 of the second half, scoring nine consecutive goals overall.
Shanahan added her second and third goals of the day in the run, for a new career-high, while Bull, Evans and Reininger also had markers for the Griffs.
Quinnipiac battled hard down the final 8:03 of the contest, trading two goals with Canisius for the 22-4 final.
Junior goalkeeper Rebecca VanLaeken earned the win in net for Canisius, moving to 11-4 on the season. Sophomore Ellen Newton controlled the net for the Blue and Gold during the second half of play, making three saves.
The Griffs will receive an off day this Wednesday and will return to action with a road matchup against MAAC rival Fairfield next Saturday at Noon.
