GENESEO — Buffalo State mounted a feverish rally, scoring five goals in the final eight minutes, but came up just short in its first SUNYAC defeat of the season, falling 12-11 today at Geneseo.

Buffalo State’s goalkeepers combined to make 15 saves to give the Bengals a chance late, but the rally ran out of time.  Elyse Stark (Lido Beach/Long Beach) finished with seven saves and eight goals against in 28 minutes, before Megan Doyle (Palmyra/Palmyra-Macedon) posted eight saves with just four goals against the rest of the way. Christina Krowel (Amsterdam/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) tallied four goals, and Alanna Herne (Tonawanda/Tonawanda) had a goal and five assists to pace the offense. Jackie Dufresne (Lake View/Frontier) and Nina Schaefer (Lafayette/Lafayette) added two goals apiece, and Cassie Saint-Vil (Middletown/Middletown) and Morgan Hogue (Painted Post/Corning) scored once each. Geneseo led 8-5 at the intermission and appeared to be taking control in the second half, extending the lead to 11-6 with nine minutes remaining. Dufresne struck with just under eight minutes remaining, but the Knights reclaimed the five-goal lead with just over six minutes left. The Bengals then roared back with a 4-0 run and when Schaefer scored with 46 seconds remaining, cut the deficit to just one. Geneseo corralled the ensuing draw control, however, and successfully ran out the clock. The Knights had a significant edge in possession time, outshooting the Bengals 38-23 for the game.  They held a 14-11 advantage in draw controls and a 25-14 edge in ground balls. Geneseo also committed just nine turnovers, compared to 18 by Buffalo State.

Junior Christina Krowel’s four goals gave her exactly 100 career points, including 84 goals. She becomes the 16th player in school history to reach 100 career points. Junior Alanna Herne became the third Bengal to reach 100 career assists. With her five assists today, she has 103 for her career.

Buffalo State will play on the road again on Saturday at New Paltz at 1 p.m.
