Junior Erica Evans set the Canisius career goals record, notching five goals and seven points, as the Canisius women’s lacrosse team defeated Siena 25-11 Wednesday afternoon from the Demske Sports Complex.
Evans passed former Griffs Megan Oosting and Tori Quinn on the Canisius all-time goals list, on her fifth and final goal of the afternoon, and now has 155 tallies for her career.
Also having a career day was sophomore Jourdan Roemer, who recorded career highs in points (8) and assists (5).
Evans contributed to the games’ first goal, assisting junior Lauren Smolensky at the 25:03 mark to get the scoring going. Siena’s Alexis Deaken would then add the second goal of the day, at 24:18, to tie the score at 1-1.
From there, the Blue and Gold put home six consecutive goals to take a 7-1 lead. Evans and Roemer found the back of the net twice in the stretch, while sophomore Tessa Chad and junior Jen Reininger each netted goals.
Siena cut the deficit to 7-2 at 16:54, on Deaken’s second goal of the contest, but the Griffs would respond with two of their own, from Reininger and junior Allie Stewart to make it 9-2 at 13:48.
The Saints held their own over the next several minutes, scoring three unanswered goals, and tightening the Griffs lead to 9-5 with 10:19 left to play in the first half.
Following a Golden Griffins timeout, the team would again find an offensive spark, going on a 8-2 run in the last 10 minutes of the half, that included three straight goals heading to the break. Evans scored her final three goals of the day over the stretch, including the record setter at the 1:03 mark. Chad, Smolensky and Stewart also added goals, for a 17-7 halftime lead.
Out of the break, Chad and Stewart would increase the Griffs lead to a then game-high 12 (19-7). The Griffs and Saints would trade two goals apiece over the next 10:01 to put the score at 21-9 with 16:15 remaining.
Junior Rena Brown added her second goal of the season to make the score 22-9 at 15:04, before the Griffs would score three of the games final five tallies for a 25-11 final.
Junior Rebecca Vanlaeken picked up her eighth win of the season (8-4), while Siena’s Sammy Horton was handed her ninth loss of the season, moving to 1-9 overall.
