BUFFALO — The Buffalo State women’s lacrosse team ran a clinic for Harlem Lacrosse in New York City this past Wednesday as part of its Spring Break trip.

The Bengals, who played three road contests in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania over the past week, stopped by the Frederick Douglass Academy in New York City to host a clinic for members of the non-profit lacrosse program, whose goal is to change the life trajectories of at-risk youth through daily academic support, mentoring, leadership training, college readiness career exploration, admissions counseling and lacrosse instruction.

Harlem Lacrosse provides school-based, full-day, year-round support for its students by placing a full-time staff member at school sites for each of its programs.  The program will work with over 540 boys and girls in the New York, Baltimore and Boston area, with a Philadelphia program coming in the fall of 2017.

Since 2011, Harlem Lacrosse students have maintained a 100 percent on-time middle school graduation rate, have passed their classes at a rate 20 percent higher than that of their peers at our school sites, and have earned over $15 million scholarship offers to independent schools and colleges that include Bates College, Colby College, Connecticut College, Gettysburg College, Haverford College, Hobart College, Tufts University, the University of Virginia, and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Bengals’ head coach Lindsay Abbott stressed the importance of hard work and perseverance to those in attendance, while also making sure that the students remembered to have fun.
