BUFFALO — The 8th Annual All WNY Music Awards nomination process has begun.
With suggestions from the public, the All WNY Music Awards committee came up with 63 categories for awards, which includes the new categories of “Best Song” and “Best Comeback.” The committee also merged the “Best Album” and “Best EP” awards and has decided on some minor format changes for 2017.
The most significant change for 2017 will be that rather than just having a first-, second-, and third-place award in each category as decided by the voting public, the 2017 awards will have a publicly voted winner, a committee-selected winner and a winner chosen by a celebrity judge in each category. This is similar to the format of the 2014 and 2013 awards.
Another significant upgrade is that some of the categories this year will offer trophies. The first-place winner in the “Album / EP of the Year,” “Best New Band,” “Best Live Performance,” “Best Music Venue,” and “Best Recording Studio” will each get a trophy made by Bad Penny Chop Shop. Additionally, an “Artist of the Year” trophy winner will be selected by the All WNY Music Awards committee from the first place winners in each of the genre-specific artist/band winners. All categories will still have award certificates as in years past.
Nominations will remain open until Aug. 1 with voting to commence on Aug. 15 and run through Oct. 15. Winners will be announced at a ceremony in December at a venue to be determined.
