Junior Erica Evans led all scorers with five goals and seven points, as the Canisius women’s lacrosse team claimed an 18-10 victory over Michigan Sunday afternoon from Michigan Stadium.
Senior Ashley Bull, sophomore Tessa Chad, and junior Allie Stewart each had three goals, as the Blue and Gold continued their offensive dominance, totaling 41 goals in two victories this week.
Stewart ranked second on the team with six points (3g, 3a), while sophomore Jourdan Roemer (2g, 2a) and junior Lauren Smolensky (1g, 2a) also totaled at least three points.
The game began with Michigan scoring three of the first four goals, for a 3-1 lead at 19:22 of the first. The Griffs would go on a 2-1 run, to cut the Michigan lead to 4-3 with 14:07 remaining in the first half, before hitting their stride.
Over the next 6:53 of play, the Golden Griffins would go on a 5-0 run to secure an 8-4 lead at the 7:14 mark. Evans scored three times during the stretch, while Smolensky and Stewart buried home a goal each.
The Griffs kept their foot on the gas to close out the half, scoring two more goals (Bull and Roemer), for a 10-5 halftime lead.
Bull added her second goal of the game to begin the second half, at 28:59, extending the Canisius lead to a then game-high six goals (11-5).
The Wolverines were able to get the deficit back to five on two occasions over the next 4:12 of play (11-6, 12-7), but the Griffs pulled away, scoring four unanswered goals for a 16-7 lead with 13:54 left in the contest.
Evans added her fourth and fifth goals of the day in the run, with Bull and junior Jen Reininger also finding the back of the net.
Michigan would score three of the games’ final five goals, leading to the 18-10 Canisius victory.
With the win, the Golden Griffins wrap up non-conference play, and move to 5-4, while Michigan is now 1-7.
Junior goalkeeper Rebecca VanLaeken made 13 saves, picking up her fifth win of the season (5-4 overall), with Michigan’s Ali Kothari moving to 1-7 for the season.
The Griffs will have nearly two weeks to prepare for MAAC play, with their next game coming on the road against Manhattan on Saturday at 4 p.m.
