BUFFALO — Three members of the Canisius women’s lacrosse team totaled at least six points, as the Golden Griffins gained a 23-12 win over Duquesne Wednesday afternoon from the Demske Sports Complex.
Junior Erica Evans led the Blue and Gold with five goals and seven points, while sophomore Jourdan Roemer and junior Allie Stewart each totaled six points on four goals and two assists.
The Griffs opened the contest with fury, jumping out to a 6-0 lead through the first 6:48 of play. Five different Griffs scored over the stretch, including, sophomore Tessa Chad, Evans (2), junior Jen Reininger, junior Lauren Smolensky and Stewart.
The Dukes didn’t crumble under the powerful Canisius start however, as Duquesne scored four unanswered goals to put the Griffs lead to 6-4 at 17:21.
The teams would trade four goals apiece over the next 14:40 of play, for a 10-8 Canisius lead at 1:32, but the Griffs would once again find their rhythm, scoring four consecutive goals in the last 1:10 of play.
The late first half charge was led by Stewart, who found the back of the net twice (giving her four first-half goals), while senior Ashley Bull and Reininger also scored to close out the half.
The Golden Griffins would go on another 4-0 run to open the second half, totaling eight unanswered goals in a 7:47 span, to give the Blue and Gold an 18-8 lead with 23:23 remaining in the match.
Canisius controlled the remainder of the contest, scoring five of the games final nine goals to cruise to 23-12 victory.
Eight different Griffs scored goals in the afternoon affair, with freshman Rachel Ryan notching the first of her young career.
Junior goalkeeper Rebecca VanLaeken picked up her fourth win of the season, making twelve saves.
With the win, the Griffs move to 4-4 on the year, while Duquesne is now 1-3 to start the season.
The Griffs hit the road once again this Sunday, when they head to Michigan for matchup against the Wolverines
