NIAGARA FALLS — The City of Niagara Falls has issued an advisory to residents due to the numerous road closings, down trees and power lines, and power outages affecting traffic signals; suggesting residents avoid all unnecessary travel until further notice.

In the city, crews are mobilized and working in cooperation with National Grid to assess damage, re-open roads, and restore power. All downed trees, power lines, and traffic signals should be reported to 286-4711.  All downed power lines should be treated as live.

Niagara County, meanwhile, has issued its own advisory asking residents to remain cautious as winds subside to be on the lookout for downed power wires and trees.

“Residents should use extra caution in assessing any property damage as remaining wind gusts can bring down earlier damaged limbs or loose utility wires,” said a statement from the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office. “Any downed utility wires encountered should be treated as live power lines until investigated by emergency or power crews.  Extra caution should be used with traffic signals that are on flash and intersections without functioning traffic signals should be treated as a four-way stop.”

Encountered dangers such as downed wires or roadway obstructions should be reported to local emergency services, while emergencies should be reported to 911.

About 17,000 Niagara County residents are still without power at this hour.
