BUFFALO — The Buffalo Skyway closed to traffic through this evening numerous events in Western New York have been canceled, and tens of thousands of customers are without power due to high winds.

The National Weather Service says a high wind warning — with sustained winds of 30- to 40 mph and gusts as high as 75 mph — is in effect through 10 p.m.

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz said via Twitter that the Skyway between downtown Buffalo and Ridge Road  will be closed from 2 to 7 p.m. Also closed, GCC’s Batavia Campus. And a planned seatbelt safety check on Grand Island this evening has been canceled.

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office says that most weather-related calls are from the southern part of Erie County, but the Northtowns are having issues, as well.

More than 11,000 NYSEG customers and 45,000 National Grid customers are without power. Pockets litter the entirety of Western New York from Niagara Falls to Honeoye Falls and Jamestown to Rochester.
