EDISON, N.J. – Sophomore attack Rachel MacCheyne of the Niagara Purple Eagles women’s lacrosse team has been named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week, announced on Monday. A native of Webster, N.Y., MacCheyne scored seven goals and one assist for eight points in two games for the Purple Eagles last week.

After scoring two goals and one assist in a narrow 11-10 home loss to the Colgate Raiders on Feb. 28, MacCheyne broke out with a terrific all-around game against the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers on March 4. The Purple Eagles collected a 15-11 victory at Mount St. Mary’s to kick off a three-game road trip, and MacCheyne scored a game-high five goals on six shots on goal. MacCheyne capped the win over the Mountaineers with a strong two-way performance as well, grabbing five draw controls to go with two ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Niagara (2-1, 0-0 MAAC) is off to a terrific start to the 2017 season. MacCheyne is tied for the Niagara team lead in goals (11) and ranks second in points (13), and along with junior Grace Hunt (5+10) and sophomore Alexis Morales (11+2), she drives a youthful Niagara offense that leads the MAAC and ranks 22nd nationally with 14.33 goals per game. The trio of Hunt, MacCheyne, and Morales are the top three players in the MAAC in points per game.

The Purple Eagles continue non-conference play this week with two games in Florida, taking on the Jacksonville Dolphins on Wednesday at 3 p.m. and the Stetson Hatters on Friday at 4 p.m.
