NEWARD, Del. — Sophomore Tessa Chad had a team leading three goals and four points, guiding the Canisius women’s lacrosse team to a 11–9 win against the University of Delaware Friday evening from Delaware Stadium.
The Golden Giffins led by as much as six on two occasions, and held a 10-4 lead with 15:30 remaining, before narrowly gaining their third victory of the year.
The game began with the Griffs scoring five of the first six goals, for a 5-1 advantage through the first 16:45. In the opening stretch, Chad put home two goals, while juniors Erica Evans, Lauren Smolensky and Jen Reininger also scored for the Griffs.
The Blue Hens would outscore Canisius 2-1 over the last 11:05 of the first half, giving the Blue and Gold a 6-3 lead at the break.
The Griffs would take the reins to open the second, going on a 3-0 run over the first 9:45 of the half, for a commanding 9-3 lead. Chad and Evans spearheaded the run, with Evans getting two of the three goals.
Over the next five minutes the teams would trade goals, giving Canisus the 10-4 advantage with a little over 15 minutes remaining.
Beginning at the 12:15 mark, Delaware found its offensive groove and scored three unanswered goals in a 1:48 stretch, cutting the Canisius lead to 10-7 at 10:27.
Reininger would add a goal on an assist from sophomore Jourdan Roemer at 9:35 to stop the run, and gave Canisius a four-point cushion with 9:35 remaining.
The Griffs would allow two goals down the stretch, but hung on for the 11-9 victory.
Junior goalkeeper Rebecca VanLaeken made nine saves in the win and picked up her third win of the season.
With the win, the Golden Griffins move to 3-3, while Delaware is now 2-2 to start their season.
The Blue and Gold will next take on defending National Champion, and the No. 2 ranked team in the country, North Carolina, Sunday at noon from the US Lacrosse Headquarters.
