ALBANY — The Purple Eagles women’s basketball team fell to Canisius, 80-74, in overtime in the MAAC Tournament First Round on Thursday.
The Purple Eagles led the Golden Griffins through the entire first quarter. Six points from both Stroemple and Maggie McIntyre put Niagara ahead of Canisius, 16-12, going into the second quarter. Niagara continued to stay ahead of Canisius, leading 31-26 with a little over three minutes remaining in the second behind six points from Corselli and a three from Morgan Baughman. The Golden Griffins, however, hit some big shots, going on an 8-1 run to take a narrow 34-32 lead going into halftime.
The Purple Eagles made a comeback in the third, coming within one point of the Griffs, 43-42, after a four-point play from Jamie Sherburne. However, despite the score being tied three times during the quarter, Canisius led 57-51 going into the final quarter. Niagara and Canisius went back and forth in the fourth quarter and with 0.3 seconds left, Corselli hit a huge three to send the game into overtime. Rampado had all of NU’s five overtime points and with a little under three minutes to go, the Purple Eagles were up one, 74-73, but the Golden Griffins kept Niagara scoreless for the remainder of the overtime period to come away with the win.
Over the course of the game, the score was tied eight times and the lead changed seven times.
