WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Brian Higgins, D-Buffalo, released a statement today on the revelations that U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions met with the Russian Ambassador on multiple occasions despite testimony, under oath, claiming he “did not have communications with the Russians.”

Higgins said Sessions should step down as a result of the incident and that a special prosecutor should be appointed on the matter.

“Truth is a prerequisite in justice. The integrity of our government and democracy cannot be taken lightly,” Higgins statement began. The rest of his statement follows:

“The Attorney General of the United States obviously misled Congress, which in itself is justification for him to step down.  As a result, a special prosecutor should be appointed either by Congress or the Justice Department to provide the American people with impartial and comprehensive answers from which we can determine further action.”

“Former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn and now Attorney General Sessions have lied about communications with Russia and the natural question is “what are they trying to hide?”

“This is not a partisan issue. Many of my colleagues on the other side of the aisle have also expressed concern about the misleading testimony provided by Attorney General Sessions and are calling for inquiries into potential Russian influence as well. I hope together there is a will to get to the truth.”

Higgins joins New York’s senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand in asking for Sessions to resign — although Gillibrand’s statement did not outright ask for his resignation.
