Canisius junior midfielder Erica Evans has been selected to the 2017 Tewaaraton women’s watch list, the foundation announced Tuesday evening from its annual reception in New York City.

Evans becomes the first ever Canisius women’s lacrosse player to be selected to the watch list for the Tewaaraton Award, after posting a strong 2016 campaign that saw the midfielder record 91 total points on 72 goals and 19 assists.

“For Erica to be recognized as one of the best players in the country is a great honor, and something we believe she deserves,” said head women’s lacrosse coach Scott Teeter. “She has been a tremendous asset to our program over her first few years, and we are proud to have such a talented student athlete as part of our program.”

Leading the Griffs to their fifth MAAC Championship in program history a season ago, the Peterborough, Ontario native was selected as the 2016 MAAC Midfielder of the Year for the second consecutive season, and was recognized as a member of IWLCA Third Team, becoming the first player in team history to be honored as an All-American.

Other accolades from the 2016 campaign included a selection to the IWLCA All-West/Midwest First Team, MAAC Tournament MVP, and Canisius Female Athlete of the Year.

Statistically, Evans set Canisius single-season records in goals (72) and points (91), and recorded the second most draw controls by a Griff in a season (81). The midfielder tied single-game records for goals (8) and draw controls (11), while also becoming the first-ever Griff to reach 100 career goals as a sophomore (110).

To begin the 2017 season, the midfielder was named to the Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-America Second Team, as well as being selected as the unanimous MAAC Preseason Player of the Year. Through the Griffs’ first four games this year, the junior leads the team in goals (11), points (13), draw controls (11), ground balls (11) and is tied for the team lead in caused turnovers (6).

Tuesday’s initial Tewaaraton women’s watch list features the nations 50 top players. The foundation will then cut the pool to 25 nominees on April 27, before announcing five finalists on May 11.

The 2017 Tewaaraton Award Ceremony will be held in Washington, DC at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian on Thursday June 1.
