BUFFALO — National Girls and Women in Sports Day has been active for more than three decades. The NGWSD empowers women and girls to embrace physical activity and push themselves past their limits. On Wednesday night, the University at Buffalo athletics department honors Coach Vicki Mitchell for her work in athletics.

“In the past, Buffalo athletics have invited marvelous speakers to tell us of their experiences. This year we wanted to make our experience more personal and engaging. We wanted to go beyond just giving the community information from a speaker about a particular aspect of sports, and move into the fascinating real life stories of those who have participated and benefitted from sports. It is important to share our stories about sports to introduce our past to our present…so together we can build our future.” Said Kathy Twist, Senior Woman Administrator for University at Buffalo.

Vicki Mitchell has accumulated a number of accolades during her time in athletics. Mitchell competed in the 1996 US Olympic Trails in the 10K, while also being ranked in the Top-10 in the USE for six years. During her college years at SUNY Cortland, Mitchell was a seven-time NCAA Champion and 10-time All-American. Mitchell led Cortland to NCAA Division III national championships in cross country and track and field. In 2003, she was named Cortland’s Western New York Alum of the Year, and in 2004 she was inducted into the Cortland C-Club Hall of Fame. In 2010, Mitchell was named to the Division III Track and Field Hall of Fame and was a member of the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame class of 2014.

Mitchell is currently US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Vice President for cross country, and serves on several working committees with the USTFCCCA. She has worked with NCAA Championships site selection committee to help bring the NCAA Cross-Country Northeast Regional meet to Buffalo 2017, 2018, and 2019. Mitchell currently serves as the director for the Buffalo Chapter of Girls on the Run, a national program designed for pre-teen girls that focuses on developing self-esteem, self-respect, and healthy living through fitness.
