FAIRFIELD, Conn. — The Canisius women’s basketball team struggled to get its offense going on Thursday, as the squad shot 29 percent from the field, and fell to the Fairfield Stags, 58-47. With the loss the Griffs drop to 9-19 overall and 8-11 in conference play while Fairfiled improves to 15-13 and 12-7 in MAAC action.

Despite opening the fourth quarter on a 13-2 and cutting the Fairfield lead to just four, 46-42 at the final media timeout, Fairfield bounced back following the break and halted the run and went on an 11-6 run of its own to outlast Canisius the rest of the way.

Despite the lack of offensive consistency, Maria Welch had her best outing of the season, scoring 17 points, hitting 6-of-13 from the field, including 3-of-10 from beyond the arc. Sara Hinriksdottir battled through a tough day, to record her 25th double-figure contest of the season, scoring 11 points and nine rebounds.

For Fairfield Kelsey Carey led the way with 18 points, while Kendra Landy (15 points) and Casey Smith (10 points) also hit double figures.

Fairfield held a slight edge on the boards, taking down 35, while the Griffs took down 30 for the game. The Griffs also protected the basketball, turning it over only nine times to the Stags 16.

The difference of the contest came in the Griffs’ inefficiency from the floor as the team was 16-of-54 from the field and just 3-of-22 from beyond the arc. Fairfield started slow, shooting just 34 percent in the first half, but bounced back and hit 63 percent in the second half, finishing the game hitting 21-of-45 from the floor,

Canisius continues its two-game road swing on Saturday, when the squad takes on Quinnipiac in the regular-season finale in Hamden, Conn. Game time agains the Bobcats is slated for 2 p.m.
