UNION CITY, Tenn. – The University at Buffalo baseball team (1-1, 0-0 MAC) was handed a 14-0 defeat on Saturday afternoon in the second game of a three-game series against UT Martin at Elam Stadium in Union City, TN. The Bulls were held to just six hits while the Skyhawks produced 16 for the game.

The Bulls threatened early on as Phillip Tomasulo was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and he andvanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Alex Thrower before moving over to third base with one out on a balk by the Skyhawks pitcher. The next two UB batters couldn’t get Tomasulo home as they both struck out swinging to end the threat.

UB threatened again in the top of the third as Sean Dunne led off the inning with his first career hit, a single to left field and Tomasulo followed with a single to center. Buffalo again wasn’t able to produce a run as they had three straight outs including a pair of strikeouts.

The Skyhawks broke through in the bottom half of the third inning and put the game away as they plated six runs. After a single and two walks loaded the bases, UT Martin connected on three straight RBI singles before Creighton Eldridge smacked a 2-RBI double to deep left center field to give the Skyhawks the 6-0 lead and they never looked back.

After a scoreless fourth inning, the Skyhawks added another run in the fifth inning as they connected on a RBI single to left field. They scored one more in the sixth to make it 8-0 as Keylen Steen ripped a triple to the wall and came around to score on a Buffalo error on the relay.

The Skyhawks erupted for six more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give them the 14-0 lead and they never looked back as they earned their first win of the season.

Six different UB players recorded one hit in the loss led by Ben Haefner who had a single and a walk. Senior Tyler Utz pinch hit in the ninth inning and notched a double, the lone extra base hit for the Bulls all game.

Starting pitcher Charlie Sobieraski struggled for the Bulls on Saturday as he went just 3.0 innings and allowed seven hits, six runs and struck out one batter. Brent Cleland made his first appearance in over a year and allowed one unearned run in 0.2 innings of work while Chris Miranda made his first career appearance on the mound and struck out a pair of batters in a hitless ninth inning.


Buffalo will return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 pm as they will take on the UT Martin Skyhawks in the finale. Shawn Dubin will take the mound for the Bulls on Sunday.
