WACO, Texas – The Purple Eagles baseball team was topped by Baylor, 7-3, in the teams’ first all-time meeting on Friday.

The Purple Eagles and the Bears were scoreless through the first two innings, but Baylor got on the board in the bottom of the third, taking a 4-0 lead. McCauley scored Niagara’s first run of the game in the top of the fifth; Geoff Seto flied into a double play, giving McCauley just enough time to round home plate. Baylor, however, extended its lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. One runner scored on a wild pitch, followed by a two-run homer by Richard Cunningham to put the Bears up 7-1. In the bottom of the sixth, down by six, the Purple Eagles continued to put up a fight, stifling two base-stealing attempts by the Bears. Niagara’s offense peaked in the top of the eighth. With Brophy and Gallup on base, Greg Cullen singled to left field, scoring Brophy. Then, with bases loaded, Owen Dziados singled to center field, sending Gallup home. Though Niagara held Baylor scoreless in the eighth, the Bears came away with the 7-3 victory.

The Purple Eagles conclude their series with Baylor on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 3:05 p.m. EST. Game three, which was originally scheduled for Sunday has moved to Saturday due to expected inclement weather.
