WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Tom Reed, a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, voted with fellow Republicans on the committee to reject a Democratic proposal requesting that the committee be allowed to view President Trump’s tax returns.

Democrats, led by U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell of New Jersey, have sought the release of the president’s taxes to the committee due to what they say are concerns about his business dealings and how they might affect his policy proposals, specifically in dealing with other countries.

An amendment to Pascrell’s original proposal was offered Tuesday by U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas would’ve triggered a request for the tax returns to the Treasury Department.

Reed, of Corning, is one of 24 Republicans on the committee. Higgins, of Buffalo, is one of the committee’s 16 Democrats, but was not at the meeting on Tuesday as he was in a Budget Committee meeting at the time. He has, however, expressed support for the measure to force the release of the returns.
