EUGENE, Ore. — Junior Allie Stewart scored three goals with a team-high four points, as the Canisius women’s lacrosse team defeated the University of Oregon 15-11 from Pape Field Monday afternoon.
Stewart tied for the team lead in goals for the Blue and Gold, with junior Jen Reininger and sophomore Tessa Chad also recording three tallies.
Canisius spread the wealth in the powerful offensive performance, as eight different Griffs found the back of the net in the 15 goal outburst.
The turning point of the contest came early on in the second half, with Canisius going on a 6-0 run over a 15:16 stretch to claim a 14-8 lead with 9:22 remaining in the contest.
The game began with the Ducks jumping out to a quick 4-1 lead through the first 2:55 of play. The Griffs would respond with a 3-1 run on goals from senior Ashley Bull, sophomore Jourdan Roemer and junior Lauren Smolensky, to pull the team within one (5-4) with 12:04 remaining in the first half.
From there, Canisius would go a 4-2 run to close the first half. Chad, Stewart, Roemer and Reininger would all score over the stretch to give the Griffs a 8-7 advantage at the half.
After an Oregon goal to tie the score at 8-8 with 24:38 remaining in the second, the Blue and Gold’s offensive barrage began. Four different Griffs would score during the 15 minute run, Stewart (2), Chad, Reininger (2) and junior Erica Evans, giving the Griffs a six goal advantage.
Oregon would not go out quietly, as the team fought its way back to within three points (14-11) with 4:19 remaining.
Sophomore Brenna Shanahan would dash any hopes of a Oregon comeback however, scoring the Griffs 15th goal of the contest at 2:37 to secure a 15-11 Golden Griffin victory.
The Griffs will play in their third road contest of the season on Saturday, Feb.18, when the team travels to the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y. to take on No. 6 Syracuse University. The Orange are 1-0 to begin the season after an 18-8 win over Boston College last Saturday.
