BUFFALO — The Niagara women’s basketball team was defeated by crosstown rival Canisius, 52-41, in the second installment of the Battle of the Bridge on Friday.
Rampado and Stroemple had all of the Purple Eagles’ first half points. Rampado led the team with 10 points and Stroemple had seven, but Canisius led 28-17 going into halftime.
Rampado and Stroemple continued to dominate for Niagara in the third quarter. Rampado had six consecutive points in the final four minutes of the quarter and Stroemple had four points. Kharysma Bryant also had two points for the Purple Eagles. Niagara, however, trailed 43-29 going into the final quarter.
Though Rampado, Jamie Sherburne, Adila Gathers and Maggie McIntyre contributed points in the fourth quarter, the Purple Eagles could not overcome Canisius’ lead and the Golden Griffins came away with the victory to sweep the season series.
Rampado led the Purple Eagles in scoring with 20 points. This is the 11th game this season in which she has scored 20 or more points. Rampado also led the team in rebounding with seven rebounds. Stroemple added 11 points and three rebounds for Niagara. Gathers had a career-high five rebounds and a team-high, and career-high, two blocks. Bryant had a team-best two assists.
The Purple Eagles take on Marist at 2 p.m. Sunday.
