NIAGARA UNIV. — The Niagara University Department of Athletics has announced Lynn Jones as the keynote speaker for the second annual Purple Eagles Baseball First Pitch Dinner, which will be held on Feb. 11.

Jones played eight seasons of Major League Baseball; he played for the Detroit Tigers from 1979 to 1983 and for the Kansas City Royals from 1984 to 1986. Jones was named the Tigers’ Rookie of the Year in 1979 and went on to play 14 postseason games with the Royals.

After his playing career, Jones spent nine years as a minor league manager for teams within the Florida Marlins and Atlanta Braves organizations. Jones also spent time coaching in the major leagues with the Royals, Marlins, Braves and the 2004  World Series champion Boston Red Sox.

In 2013, Jones joined the coaching staff of his alma mater, Thiel College, where he holds the single-season batting record (.440).
