POUGHKEEPSIE — Despite taking a one  point lead with 3:14 left in the third quarter, the Canisius women’s basketball team was bested by the Marist Red Foxes, 67-60 on Saturday. With the loss Canisius drops to 6-15 and 5-7 in MAAC play while Marist improves to 9-12 and 6-5 in conference action.

Following the Griffs taking the lead late in the third quarter, Marist proceeded to go on a 10-4 run through the final two minutes to end the frame with a five point lead, an advantage it didn’t relinquish the rest of the way.

Its senior guard, Lauren D’Hont, who notched 19 points, shooting 7-of-10 for the game, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, led the Griffs offensively. Sophomore Sara Hinriksdottir broke double-digits as well, scoring 11 points and nearly recorded a double-double, taking down nine boards.

The Red Foxes had four players hit double figures with Claire Oberdorf pacing the team with 19 points. Kendall Baab (14 points), Hannah Hand (12) and Maura Fitzpatrick (11 points) also reached double-digits.

Canisius had a higher field goal percentage in the game, hitting 40.7 percent of its chances (22-of-54), while Marist shot 21-of-63 for a mark of 33.3 percent, however the Red Foxes led in the defensive categories.

Marist outrebounded the Griffs 41-35, while the team from Pougkeepsie turned it over just seven times in the game, while Canisius gave it away 12 times.

Canisisu gets ready for a three-game homestand starting this coming Thursday, as the squad welcomes Manhattan on Feb. 2 and Iona on Feb. 4. The squad then welcomes Niagara on Friday, Feb. 10, which will take place as the first game of a Canisius vs. Niagara doubleheader, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Game times against Manhattan and Iona are 7 p.m. and 2p.m., respectively.
