LOUDONVILLE — The Canisius women’s basketball team turned the ball over a season-high 29 times and scored just 28 points over the final three quarters, as the Blue and Gold were bested by Siena, 67-42 on Thursday night. With the loss the Blue and Gold dropped to 6-14 and 5-6 in MAAC play, while Siena improved to 8-12 and 7-4 in conference action.

The Saints came into the contest excelling in forcing giveaways and did just that, recording 15 steals and 29 points off of turnovers.

Trailing by 11 points (33-22) headed into the third quarter, the Saints opened up on a 9-0 run. Canisius laid in a bucket to make it 42-24, but Siena resumed its run, going on another 9-0 run to open up the first five minutes of the third quarter on a 18-2 run. With the opened up, the Saints never looked back.

On offense Maria Welch led the Griffs, scoring 13 points and chipping in three rebounds and two assists in the effort. Welch’s total was the only double-figure sum by a Canisius player as Sara Hinriksdottir, Lauren D’Hont, and Margret Halfdanardottir all tallied seven points.

For Siena Jackie Benitez led the way with 15 points, while Sabrina Piper (13 points), Meghan Donohue (12 points) and Kollyns Scarbrough (12 points) all reached double figures as well.

While the Blue and Gold suffered from ball safety issues, Siena also won the battle of the glass, taking down 34 boards to Canisius’ 24.

The Griffs, which came into the contest ranked second in the league in field goal percentage, shot just 37.5,while Siena hit 44.3 percent of its shots.

The Griffs will conclude its two-game road swing at Marist on Saturday, as the squad takes on the Red Foxes with tip set for 7 p.m. Following the game against Marist, the Blue and Gold head home for a three-game homestand before heading back out on the road.
