WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) entered remarks into the Congressional Record in recognition of International Holocaust Day, observed today.

Higgins said, “This is a time to mourn the millions of victims of the Holocaust. And it serves as an annual reminder to Americans, and indeed to all humanity, that we must never forget the evil that mankind has visited upon itself.”

Earlier this week Congressman Higgins paid tribute to a Western New York WWII veteran who fought for and witnessed the liberation of concentration camps.

The United Nations Holocaust Memorial Ceremony will be streamed live at 11am on Friday, January 27.

The word Holocaust has Greek origins, derived from the words “holos” meaning whole and “kaustos” or burned.  It is estimated that six million people were killed at the hands of the Nazi regime under Adolf Hitler’s rule.
