BUFFALO — The University at Buffalo has announced that JoAnna Smith and Nick Perkins are its athletes of the week.

Senior JoAnna Smith found her groove this past week as she helped lead the Bulls to a 2-0 record. Smith finished the week averaging 23.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals while leading UB in scoring in both wins. The senior led Buffalo on Wednesday in their 11-point road win at Bowling Green as she finished the game with 18 points, three rebounds and two steals. On Saturday, the sharpshooter tied her season-high with 29 points as the Bulls avenged a loss to Central Michigan from earlier in the season. Smith went 11-for-25 from the floor and 4-for-13 from three point range while snagging five rebounds and a steal in a season-high 38 minutes. With her 29-point effort, Smith has now gone over the 20-point plateau five times including three times in her last six games. The senior moved into 15th place on the Bulls all-time scoring charts on Sunday as she has gathered 1,119 career points. On the year, Smith is leading UB in scoring as she is averaging 15.3 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game. Through seven MAC games, Smith is averaging 19.4 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.7 steals.

Sophomore Nick Perkins led the Bulls to a pair of double figure victories this past week as he averaged 19.0 points and 8.0 rebounds off the bench.  Perkins began the week by scoring 17 points and pulling down six boards as UB won its seventh straight game against Kent State and its fourth straight at the M.A.C. Center.  Perkins followed that up with his third double-double of the season as he led all scorers with 21 points, and added 10 rebounds, in Buffalo’s win over Western Michigan on Saturday.  It was the first time this year that the Bulls have won back-to-back games. Perkins is averaging 13.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per game this year.
