The Canisius women’s basketball team held Fairfield to just 49 points and 33 percent from the field enroute to its fifth MAAC win of the season on Sunday, defeating the Stags, 63-49 at the Koessler Athletic Center. The Griffs held Fairfield under 15 points in all-four quarters to record the win, as the Blue and Gold improved to 6-13 overall and 5-5 in conference action. The Stags dropped to 9-10 and 6-4 in MAAC action.

Fairfield led for just eight minutes in the contest, as it was up by five (10-5) early in the first quarter, before the Griffs battled back to take the lead thanks to a late bucket before the frame expired to take a 15-14 lead to the break. Canisius never trailed the rest of the way, leading for final 30:23.

Sophomore sensation, Sara Hinriksdottir continued her dominant season as she led the team with 17 points and eight rebounds. She also chipped in three assists and shot .600 from the field (6-of-10) and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.

Also aiding the Canisius offense was a trio of players who tallied 11 points. Margret Halfdanardottir, Maria Welch and Saliah Serrette all reached 11 points for the Griffs offense.

The Blue and Gold defense was just as big of a story in this game as Canisius held Fairfield to 33 percent form the field and held the league’s leading rebounder, Samantha Cooper, to under 10 boards.

The Stags were led offensively by Kelsey Carey who recorded 20 points, while Cooper (15 points) and Casey Smith (10 points) also chipped in on offense.

For a team with as much size as the Stags had, the Griffs battled hard to control the glass, taking down 32 rebounds to Fairfields 28. The Stags were also limited on second-chance points, scoring just eight for the day and coming down with just nine offensive boards.

Canisius on the other hand shot an impressive 48 percent from the field, including a second-quarter where the squad tallied eight buckets on 11 shots from the floor for a 72.7 percent mark.

The Griffs head out back on the road when the team travels to Siena on Thursday and finish its two game stand at Marist on Saturday. Game times are both set for 7 p.m.
