BUFFALO – Canisius senior defenseman Geoff Fortman has been selected as one of 15 nominees for the 2017 Hockey Humanitarian Award, the Hockey Humanitarian Award Foundation announced Thursday.

The Foundation and its long-time lead sponsor, BNY Mellon Wealth Management, present the award annually to college hockey’s finest citizen — a student-athlete who makes significant contributions not only to his or her team, but also to the community-at-large through leadership in volunteerism.

A native of Crystal Lake, Ill., Fortman has appeared in 121 games for Canisius during his collegiate career, amassing two goals and 18 assists.

As a senior, Fortman has compiled one goal and five assists in 23 games while ranking second on the squad with 39 blocked shots. He was selected by his teammates to serve as team captain for the 2016-17 season after spending the 2015-16 campaign as the squad’s assistant captain.

In the classroom, Fortman is the two-time reigning Atlantic Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a three-time Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team pick. A mathematics major with a cumulative GPA of 3.98, he received a Canisius Earning Excellence Program grant for the summer of 2016 to study Quantum Computing in close cooperation with a faculty member at Canisius College.

Fortman is an active member of both the Canisius and greater Buffalo communities. He has served a variety of charitable organizations during his time with the Griffs, including the Buffalo Bisons youth hockey program, the South Buffalo Community Table Soup Kitchen, Meals on Wheels of WNY, the Canisius Student-Athlete Advisory Council, Hasek’s Heroes and the Movemeber Foundation.

Finalists for the 2017 Hockey Humanitarian Award will be announced in February. The 2017 recipient will be recognized in a ceremony on Friday, April 7, as part of Frozen Four weekend in Chicago.
