DEPEW — Voters in the Village of Depew have an important decision to make today: whether or not they still want to be residents of Depew or whether they want to dissolve the village into the surrounding towns of Cheektowaga and Lancaster.

Proponents of dissolution say village government is costly and that the towns could easily absorb the costs largely due to what is a duplication of services. Those against dissolution don’t believe the numbers — that dissolution could save the average homeowner as much as $1,000 annually — and fear dissolution will mean a loss of services.

About 2/3 of the 15,000-or-so people in the village are eligible to vote. If they vote to dissolve, Depew residents west of Transit Road will be absorbed into Cheektowaga, while those east of Transit Road will be Lancaster residents.

Polls open at noon and run to 9 p.m. with voting expected to be heavy on the topic.
