WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. — The Canisius women’s basketball, which had been trailing for three quarters, had its offense go cold at the wrong time, scoring just six points in the final frame, as Monmouth defeated the Griffs 55-53.
Canisius entered the fourth quarter up by eight points but the Hawks outscored Canisius 16-6 in the final 10 minutes to improve to 8-8 overall and 3-4 in conference action. Canisius is now 4-13 overall and 3-5 in MAAC play.
Canisius had led the entire way up to that run, holding its largest lead, three minutes into the third quarter as Lauren D’Hont laid in a bucket to give Canisius a 15 point lead.
However in the fourth quarter, the Monmouth offense heated up and the Hawk defense clamped down, not allowing a single Canisius field goal the 10 minute quarter.
Offensively the Griffs had three players in double-digits with Margret Halfdanardottir leading the way with 17 points. She was dangerous from beyond the arc, hitting 3-of-4 from the fame and added three assists to her stat line.
D’Hont (11 points) and Sara Hinriksdottir (13 points) also reached double-figures. The duo also paced the team in rebounds with Hinirksdottir coming down with six and D’Hont coming up with five.
For Monmouth the offense was spread around as 10 different players notched points.
The Hawks were led by Tyese Purvis and Alexa Middleton who both had eight points, while Christina Mitchell led the team with 10 rebounds and chipped in seven points.
On defense the Griffs were outrebounded 40-32 but the turning point came with possession of the basketball, as the Griffs gave it away 19 times in the game. Monmouth also turned it over quite a bit in the first half but only coughed it up two times in the final two quarters to help secure the victory.
Canisius now travels back home and will finish its three-game road swing when the squad takes on Niagara on Wednesday. That game time is set for 7 p.m.
