Gerda McCarthy of the Town of Wheatfield, passed away on Monday, January 2, 2017, in Northgate Manor. She was born in Berlin, Germany, on December 20, 1925, the daughter of the late Paul and Berta [Grodde] Nitz.

Mrs. McCarthy came to Niagara Falls with her husband in 1954. She taught continuing education classes at North Tonawanda and Starpoint Schools, German Culture, creative writing and stress management. Mrs. McCarthy was the editor of the Niagara County Community College’s the Vineyard publication and had self published several songs. She loved to write, enjoyed painting, photography, music, dancing, nature and her pets.

Mrs. McCarthy was the wife of the late CW2 (ret.) Timothy L. “Ted” McCarthy, who died in 1977. She is survived by a daughter Maureen (Dennis) Kaus, a son SFC Dennis (Liliana) McCarthy , a daughter in law Dr. Margaret Benson-McCarthy, ten grandchildren Abigail Benson-McCarthy, Katie (Michael) Kaus O’Connell, Heidi (Justin) Kaus Willess, Erin Kaus, Cassondra (Michael) McCarthy Barbara, TSgt. Dennis A. (Kathryn) McCarthy, Caitlyn (Sean Haas) McCarthy, Natasha, Dylon and Gwenyth McCarthy, seven great grandchildren Aiden, Addison, Logan, Michael, Liam, Michael and Harper. She was the dear friend of Carol Henderson and Paula Veltri and their families. Mrs. McCarthy was the mother of the late SGM Daniel Benson-McCarthy, Michael T. and Catherine McCarthy.

Private funeral services were held at the wishes of her family.

Memorials may be made in her name to the Niagara County SPCA or to the Niagara Aquarium.

Inurnment in Riverdale Cemetery, Lewiston, NY.

Arrangements were made through the RHONEY FUNERAL HOME, Sanborn, NY.
