The Canisius men’s basketball team, riding its longest winning streak since 1998-99, returns to the court Wednesday night when the Golden Griffins host Quinnipiac. Game time is set for 7 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.

The Canisius men’s basketball team, fresh off an 82-79 win over Siena on Monday, returns to action tonight when the team hosts Quinnipiac. The Golden Griffins are 9-5 overall and 2-1 after beating Siena. The Griffs come into tonight’s game riding a six-game winning streak, the longest win streak for the program since 1998-99. As of Jan. 3, Canisius is one of 19 teams in the country with an active win streak of six games or better.

The Griffs’ win over Siena on Monday also improved the team to a perfect 6-0 against schools from New York State this year. The Griffs are averaging 88.0 points per game in their last nine outings since scoring a season-low 58 points in a loss to Tennessee State Nov. 23. Junior Kassius Robertson, who scored the first 14 points of the game for Canisius in Monday’s win over Siena, comes into tonight’s game ranked third in the MAAC in scoring average with his 17.8 points per game. Freshman Spencer Foley had a career-high 15 points vs. Siena on Monday.

This will be the seventh all-time meeting between these two schools, with Canisius holding a 4-2 lead in the series. With Canisius’ 63-53 win at Quinnipiac last season, the road team in this series has won five of the seven contests. The Griffs are 3-0 in their only three trips to Hamden, Connecticut, but the Bobcats are 2-1 all-time in Buffalo. This series has provided for some dramatics as well. Two of the last three games between these schools have been decided by three points or less, with each school winning one of those contests.

Quinnipiac comes into this evening’s game with a 5-8 overall record and a 2-1 mark in MAAC games. The Bobcats snapped a two-game losing skid Monday night with an 81-78 come-for-behind win over Niagara in the Gallagher Center. That was Quinnipiac’s first road win of the year. Freshman Mikey Dixon leads the Bobcats with his 15.2 points per game. That ranks 10th in the MAAC, and first among all of the league’s freshmen. Junior Chaise Daniels is good for 11.7 points per game, while shooting 53.6 percent from the floor, which ranks sixth-best in the conference. All 59 of Daniels’ makes from the field this season have been traditional two-point field goals. Quinnipiac is good for 75 points per game as a team, which ranks fifth in the MAAC. Defensively, the Bobcats are allowing 80.5 points per outing, which ranks 11th in the conference and 321st in the nation.

Canisius’ 82-79 win over Siena on Monday extended the Griffs’ winning streak to six straight, the longest active win streak for any team in the MAAC. During this winning streak, which dates back to the Blue and Gold’s 87-77 win at Boston University Dec. 7, Canisius is averaging 89.5 points per game while shooting 48.6 percent from the field and 44.1 percent from 3-point land. The current six-game winning streak is the program’s longest since the 1998-99 season, when the Blue and Gold ripped off eight consecutive victories. This current hot streak for the Griffs marks just the fifth time since 1986-87 where the Blue and Gold have won six or more consecutive games, highlighted by the 1993-94 team’s 15-game win streak.

The Griffs will return to the road for a pair of MAAC games, starting Sunday, Jan. 8 when the team meets Iona in New Rochelle. Game time is set for 4 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
