JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Purple Eagles women’s basketball team dropped a tough game to conference opponent Saint Peter’s on Friday.

The Purple Eagles took a quick 5-0 lead in the first quarter. Kaylee Stroemple made a layup with a little over nine minutes left in the quarter and Tiffany Corselli sank a three with a little over eight minutes remaining. Corselli made another three with about 30 seconds remaining in the quarter and the Purple Eagles trailed narrowly, 12-11, going into the second quarter. Two points from Stroemple and seven points from Rampado put Niagara back in the lead, 20-16, with a little under seven minutes remaining in the second quarter. Baughman sank two shots from the charity stripe with under a minute remaining to put the Purple Eagles up 30-22, but the Peacocks made a comeback, sinking a three at the buzzer to tie the score, 30-30, going into the half.

Rampado converted a 3-point play to open the third quarter and give Niagara a 33-30 lead. With a little under four and a half minutes remaining in the third, Baughman made a 3-pointer to extend Niagara’s lead, 46-41. Saint Peter’s came back to tie the score 46-46 with a little under three and a half minutes remaining in the quarter, but the Purple Eagles stayed strong and led 54-52 going into the final quarter. The Peacocks went on an 11-0 run to open the fourth quarter. Two from Rampado and a three from Baughman brought the Purple Eagles back within a few points of the lead, 63-59.
Jamie Sherburne sank a three with a little under a minute left in the fourth and Baughman hit another three with five seconds remaining in the game to score the Purple Eagles’ final points of the game.

The Purple Eagles play their first game of 2017 at Siena on Monday, Jan. 2 at 7:00 p.m.
