BUFFALO — The Buffalo Board of Education will hold a special meeting at 2:30 p.m. Thursday to discuss board member conduct, according to a notice released by the school district.

The notice states that “pursuant to Section 5.2 of the By-Laws of the Buffalo Board of Education, Board President Dr. Nevergold has called a “Special Meeting” of the Board to be held in the
Common Council Chambers, 13th Floor – City Hall on Thursday, December 29, 2016 at 2:30 PM.
The purpose of this meeting is to discuss Board Member conduct.”

While specifics of the meeting have not been made available, the announcement comes in the wake of comments made by Buffalo Board of Education member Carl Paladino in last week’s Artvoice in which he made disparaging remarks about President Barack Obama and First Lady Michele Obama.

Section 5.2 of the bylaws states:

Special meetings of the Board shall be called by the Board President or on the request of any Board Member, with the approval of five (5) members.  A reasonable and good faith effort shall be made by the Superintendent or the Board President, as the case may be, to give every member of the Board forty-eight hours’ notice of the time, place and purpose of the meeting.  All special meetings shall be held at a regular meeting place of the Board and also in accordance with provisions of the Open Meetings Law as may be applicable.  There will be no speakers at the special meetings of the Board of Education.

In an emergency, the forty-eight hour notice may be waived by having each Board member sign a waiver-of-notice form.

Public notice of the time and place shall be given, to the extent practicable, to the news media and shall be conspicuously posted in one or more designated public locations at a reasonable time prior to the meeting.
