ITHACA — The Canisius College women’s basketball team readies for one more contest before the Christmas Holiday on Thursday, as the squad takes on Cornell at 5 p.m.

Earlier in the week a strong performance by Sara Hinriksdottir, who was one assist and one rebound shy of a triple-double, poured in 29 points for a new career-high against Morehead State. Thanks to her performance Hinriksdottir tallied her ninth straight-game of double-figures. Coming into the weekend the Griffs are 2-8 overall and 1-1 in conference play and have dropped three of  their last four games Hinriksdottir maintains the team lead in points per game, averaging 15.5, with D’Hont’s 12.1 points per game, ranking second. Aside from being second on the team in points, D’Hont is the team leader in rebounds per game, taking down 5.4 rebounds per contest. Canisius has four players that have registered 20-or-more assists this season, with Hinriksdottir (28) and Margret Halfdanardottir (26), ranking first and second. Also hitting 20-or-more assists so far this season is Tamara Miskovic (23) and D’Hont (20). As a team the Blue and Gold is averaging 63.8 points per game, while opponents are scoring 72.4. Rebounding is an area that the team is working to improve, averaging 33.1 per game, while opponents average 42.6. This season the Blue and Gold are averaging 41.8 percent from the field while opponents are shooting slightly better with a 42.0 mark. Canisius has been able to work the basketball around its offense this season, averaging 15.9 assists per game, while foes have been limited to 14.5. Turnovers have been another point of emphasis for the Griffs, as the team is averaging 16.4 giveaways, while forcing 14.6 per game from opponents.  

Cornell comes into the game with a 6-3 record and is 3-1 in home contests this season. Three players on the Big Red averaged 10-or-more points, with Nia Marshall leading the way with 14.4 points per game. Megan LeDuc is second on the team in points per game with a 12.3 mark, while Kerri Moran joins the trio in averaging double-figures, coming into the contest averaging 10.0 points. The Big Red opened the season with three-straight wins but has since split the last six games, going 3-3. The Griffs and Big Red have one common foe this season, as both teams have faced Saint Francis (Pa.), with the Cornell having won 78-72, while the Blue and Gold dropped its contest vs. the Red Flash, 95-74. Cornell is averaging 63.8 points per game, while opponents are tallying 61.3. The Big Red is also leading the way on the battle for the glass, averaging 35.4, while opponents are averaging 31.9.

The Griffs lead the all-time series 7-1 through the program’s history. Canisius is currently riding a four-game win streak against the Big Red, dating back to Nov. 29, 2005, however the two teams haven’t played since the 2011. Under head coach Terry Zeh the Blue and Gold have gone 2-0 both on the road and at home.
