MACHIAS — A 17-year-old Machias male, charged with third-degree criminal trespassing, attempted to flee police custody at his Town of Machias Court arraignment on Tuesday.
According to New York State Police, Gavin C. Haynes, while handcuffed behind his back, broke away from the Trooper’s grip and began to flee on foot following the arraignment on the trespassing charge. The Trooper quickly caught up to Haynes and tackled him to the ground. As the Trooper was attempting to regain control of Haynes, the Trooper’s side arm became dislodged from the holster. Haynes was able to retrieve the weapon and discharged a single round into a snowbank.
There were no injuries sustained from this incident. Haynes was additionally arraigned on charges of first-degree robbery, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, third-degree escape and first-degree reckless endangerment at the Town of Machias Court and remanded to Cattaraugus County Jail without bail.
The incident remains under investigation.
