YORKSHIRE — A 44-year-old Springville man was arrested on DWI, drug and weapons charges on Saturday following a traffic stop early Saturday morning on West Yorkshire Road.

According to New York State Police, Troopers originally stopped Hugh D. Smith for backing unsafely through an intersection. A short pursuit followed on McKinstry Road that went into the Town of Machias, where Smith lost control of his vehicle and struck a snowbank at McKinstry and Zoulko roads.

Smith was taken into custody and found to have a .08 percent blood alcohol content, leading to the DWI charge. He was subsequently also charged with first-degree felony aggravated unlicensed operation, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, third-degree unlawful fleeing of a police officer, second-degree reckless endangerment, unlawful possession of marijuana, reckless driving, and failing to use an interlock device.

Smith was arraigned in the Town of Yorkshire court and remanded to the Cattaraugus County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 security bond. He is scheduled to return to court at a later date.
