RALEIGH, N.C. — Down 1-0 with under three minutes to go, Evander Kane scored his fifth goal of the season for the Buffalo Sabres, tying the game and sending it to overtime. The Sabres took a point from the game, losing in an eventual shootout to the Carolina Hurricanes.

The game saw a single penalty, a hooking penalty against the Sabres’ Johan Larsson in the first period. It was otherwise, 5-on-5 throughout.

Joakim Nordtrom scored the Hurricane’s regulation goal 14:04 into the first period, assisted by Jay McClement. Following a scoreless second period, Kane scored his goal at 17:23 of the third, assisted by Jake McCabe and Marcus Foligno.

After a scoreless overtime, Lee Stempniak scored what would be the game winner in the shootout against Sabres’ netminder Anders Nilsson, who stopped 21 of 22 shots in regulation.

The Sabres next play Tuesday when they visit the Florida Panthers.
