BUFFALO — Joanna Smith and Bryan Lantry were named the University at Buffalo Athletes of the Week.

Senior shooting guard Smith had her best game of the season on Thursday night as she helped the Bulls improve to 8-0 on the year, tying a program record for best start to a season. Smith scored a season-high 23 points as she was able to connect on a season-best four three pointers while grabbing six rebounds and two steals.

The senior was on fire in the first half, netting a season-best 19 points on 6-for-14 from the floor and 4-for-8 from deep. Smith has now connected on at least one three pointer in 42 of her last 45 games and at least three triples in 25 of 44 games. She now sits at 956 career points as she leads the Bulls on the year averaging 14.0 PPG.

Lantry earned a 6-3 decision over 19th-ranked Anthony Tutolo on Sunday to help Buffalo defeat Kent State, 23-12. It was the Bulls’ first win over the Golden Flashes since 2005.

Lantry earned an early takedown to hold a 2-1 advantage after the first period. After Tutolo tied the match up, 2-2, with an escape in the second period, Lantry dominated the third. The Bulls’ redshirt-sophomore had an escape and a takedown in the third period. His riding timing point gave him the 6-3 victory for his second win over a ranked opponent this season.
