BUFFALO – Canisius junior forward Ryan Schmelzer was named the Atlantic Hockey Travel Team USA Player of the Week on Tuesday, league officials announced.

Schmelzer is the fourth different Griff to receive weekly honors this season. Senior goaltender Charles Williams has been named Goalie of the Week on three occasions (Oct. 25. Nov. 8 & Nov. 22). Sophomore Felix Chamberland was tabbed Player of the Week on Oct. 25 and freshman Matt Hoover took home Rookie of the Week accolades on Nov. 22.

A native of Buffalo, Schmelzer was recognized after tallying five points (2g, 3a) in guiding the Griffs to a win and a tie against Bentley at HARBORCENTER last weekend. He matched his career high with three points, scoring a goal and adding two assists, in a 4-3 win over the Falcons in the series opener on Dec. 2. Schmelzer followed that performance by notching a goal and an assist in a 3-3 tie the following evening.

Canisius (6-8-3, 5-3-3 AHC) returns to action Dec. 30-31 at Holy Cross. The Griffs are back at HARBORCENTER Jan. 6-7 to close out non-conference play against nationally-ranked St. Lawrence.
