GENESEO — Zach Nieminen (Ajax, ON/Notre Dame CSS) scored twice and Mike DeLaVergne (Pawling, NY/Pawling) made 27 saves as host Buffalo State upset nationally No. 4-ranked Geneseo, 4-1, tonight in a SUNYAC contest.

Anthony Passero (Fort Erie, ON/Lakeshore) added a goal and an assist, and Hugo Petit (Chelsea, QC/CIH Acad.) also scored for the Bengals. Taylor Pryce (Newmarket, ON/Cardinal Carter) and Zach Remers (Clarence, NY/Canisius) registered a pair of assists each in the win. Passero opened the scoring with a power-play marker in less than eight minutes into the game off a feed from Remers. The Bengals pushed the lead to 2-0 with a shorthanded marker later in the frame when Pryce and Nieminen converted a 2-on-0 breakaway into Nieminen’s fifth goal of the season.

Geneseo started to take control in the second period, but DeLaVergne kept the Knights in check, including thwarting a 2-on-0 breakaway during an ill-timed line change by the Bengals. Geneseo did manage to get on the scoreboard with a power-play goal minutes later, but he Knights would not solve DeLaVergne again the rest of the way. Buffalo State withstood some early pressure in the third period, before Nieminen netted his second of the game and sixth of the year off a Pryce rebound, reclaiming the two goal lead with less than eight minutes left in regulation. Petit put the game out of reach just 50 seconds later with his second of the season from Passero and Remers.
The Knights held a 28-21 advantage in shots, including 22-11 over the final 40 minutes. Both teams were 1 for 4 on the power play.

Buffalo State will host Cortland next Friday at 7 p.m.
