The Canisius women’s basketball’s defensive woes continued on Saturday, as the Lamar Cardinals, out-rebounded the Griffs 55-30, and went on to win the afternoon contest, 65-51 at the Koessler Athletic Center. Of the 55 boards, 28 came on the offensive end for Lamar, leading to 21 second chance points. With the loss Canisius falls to 1-4, while the Cardinals improve to 3-3 overall.

Canisius had three players hit double-figures on offense, with Sara Hinriksdottir and Maria Welch recording 14 points apiece. A late offensive surge from senior Lauren D’Hont pushed her into double-digits as well with 11.

For the Cardinals, the efforts of Moe Kinard and Kiandra Bowers, powered the winning effort, as the duo posted 18 points apiece. They each recorded a double-double as well as both of the Lamar standouts tallied 10 boards apiece.

Four different players for Lamar posted double-figure rebounds with Kiara Desamours and Chastadie Barrs taking down 11 and 10, to join the aforementioned duo.

Canisius dug itself an early hole in the first quarter, getting outscored 17-7, however were able to cut into the lead a bit in the second, scoring 13 points to the Cardinals 15, and taking a 32-20 deficit to halftime.

The Griffs opened up the third quarter quickly, going on an 10-2 run in the first three minutes, before Lamar called a timeout, leading by just four, 34-30.

However The Cardinals worked the score back up to 10 thanks to a layup by Bowers at the 5:37 mark, and would end the stanza with a double-figure advantage, 50-40.

The comeback bid fell short in the fourth, as opening buckets by Lamar’s Ashlan Miles and Bowers early in the stanza, pushed the lead to 15, and the Griffs didn’t recover, eventually falling 65-51.

The Griffs have an early test in conference play coming up next weekend, as the team welcomes Rider and Monmouth to the Koessler Athletic Center. The Broncs take on the Griffs at 7 p.m. on Saturday, with the Hawks visiting the KAC on Sunday at 2 p.m. Both matchups will be broadcast on ESPN3 and the WATCHESPN app.
