WASHINGTON, D.C. — One goal just isn’t enough. Especially when the other team scores three.

So it was Friday evening when the Buffalo Sabres fell to the Washington Capitals, 3-1 at the Verizon Center.

Washington opened the scoring at 5:08 of the first period as Daniel Winnick scored an even-strength goal, assisted by Brett Connolly and Lars Eller.

In the second period, Marcus Johansson made it 2-0 Washington at 13:25. Justin Williams assisted.

Sam Reinhart scored for Buffalo at 9:58 of the third period, assisted by Kyle Okposo and Cody Franson. The Sabres appeared poised to make a game of it with the Capitals but a too many many on the ice penalty then led to a third Capitals goal, essentially putting the game out of reach. Connolly scored that goal at 16:05, assisted by Alexander Ovechkin.

The Sabres, now 7-9-5, next play Tuesday when the visit Ottawa.
