BUFFALO – For their efforts in leading the Canisius College hockey program to a three-point weekend against American International, senior goaltender Charles Williams and freshman forward Matt Hoover were both recognized as Atlantic Hockey announced its Travel Team USA Weekly Awards on Tuesday.

Williams was named the league’s Goalie of the Week for the third time this season. Hoover, meanwhile, garnered Rookie of the Week accolades for the first time.

Williams was recognized after stopping 63-of-64 shots he faced last weekend. The Canton, Mich., product turned aside all 24 shots faced to record his second shutout of the season in the series opener and followed that performance with a 39-save effort in the series finale. Williams’ performance in the series finale marked the seventh time this season that Williams has finished with 30 or more saves in a contest.

Hoover notched his first collegiate hat trick in the series opener. His hat trick was a natural one as he tallied the first three goals of the game, including the game-winning marker with 3.5 seconds remaining in the second period. Hoover became the first Canisius freshman to record a hat trick since Jason Weeks accomplished the feat during the 2006-07 campaign.

Canisius (5-7-2, 4-2-2 AHC) returns to action Friday with a 7:35 p.m. contest against Atlantic Hockey foe Mercyhurst at KeyBank Rink at HARBORCENTER.
