Despite senior leader, Lauren D’Hont’s career-high 24 points, the Canisius College women’s basketball team struggled in the second half and lost to St. Francis (Pa.) on Tuesday morning in Loretto, Pa. Also having a career-game was sophomore Sara Hinriksdottir who poured in a career-best 20 points in the losing effort. With the loss Canisius drops to 1-3 overall and St. Francis (Pa.) Improves to 2-2.

The Griffs kept things close for much of the first half, taking the lead, 41-38, thanks to a D’Hont layup with 1:20 left in the second quarter. The Red Flash retook the lead late, but Saliah Serrette recorded a layup with 22 seconds left to draw the score to 43-43 at halftime.

The second half proved to be the difference maker, as St. Francis came out of the break and outscored the Griffs 28-12, to go up 71-55. That would be all the Red Flash needed as they stayed out in front for the remainder of the game to tally the 95-74 victory.

Two players that have been the linchpins to the offense, D’Hont and Hinriksdottir, continued their strong seasons, as the duo both tallied career-best point totals. D’Hont was 8-of-16 from the floor, and was 7-of-9 from the charity stripe. She also chipped in seven rebounds to lead the team.

Hinriksdottir also had another strong contest, scoring 20 points for the first-time in her career, and going 8-of-17 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. She was a jack-of-all-trades with five rebounds and five assists and three blocks in the effort.

Also hitting double figures was Saliah Serrette who notched 11 points and added a pair of assists.

The Red Flash had five players in double-figures with Maya Wynn leading the charge with 23 points. Ace Harrison was also a force, recording a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Katie Reese (18 points), Jessica Kovatch (15) and Courtney Zeza (15 points) rounded out the top scorers for St. Francis (Pa.).

The Griffs now get ready for a four-game homestand beginning with a post-Thanksgiving matchup against Lamar on Saturday, and continuing with Rider (Dec. 2), Monmouth (Dec. 4) and Buffalo (Dec. 8). Game times are 1 p.m., 7 p.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
