The Canisius College women’s basketball team couldn’t overcome a slow start, and fell to the Akron Zips at the Koessler Athletic Center on Sunday,73-64. After getting outscored 31-13 in the first quarter, the Blue and Gold climbed back into the contest, outscoring the Zips 51-42 in the final three frames, however the comeback bid fell short. With the loss the Griffs are now 1-2 while Akron improves to 2-1.

The story of the contest was the individual performance of Akron’s standout, Hannah Plybon who shot 12-of-21 from the field including nine treys, for 39 points for the Zips. There was only one other player for the Akron offense in double-figures, Megan Sefcik (12 points).

Canisius was led by senior, Lauren D’Hont who recorded 16 points, (7-of-14) and seven rebounds. Sara Hinriksdottir recorded a career-high in points as well, notching 15 and also coming down with seven boards in the effort.

Akron finished the game shooting 43.4 percent from the field, while Canisius shot 38.5 percent. The Zips won the battle of the glass decisively, 44-28.

The tale of the game proved to be the first quarter as the Akron offense poured in 31 points, while Canisius shot just 21.7 from the field in the first frame for 13 points.

The Canisius defense clamped down in the second quarter, however, limiting the Zips to just one field goal through the 10-minute stanza, and kept Akron from hitting a bucket for the final 9:47 of the quarter. Canisius outscored Akron in the frame 14-10 with eight of the Zips points coming the way of free throws.

The two teams went to halftime with Akron leading 41-27.

Canisius kept up the defensive pressure, slowly chipping away at the lead through much of the third and fourth quarters, getting the lead down to just six points at 3:39 and seven points with 3:09 left to go in the game. However Plybon answered with treys following each Canisius bucket and kept Akron in the lead for its second win of the year.

The Griffs get ready for a busy Thanksgiving week, as the squad heads to St. Francis (Pa.) in Loretto, Pa., on Tuesday and then host Lamar at the KAC on Saturday. Game times are 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
