BUFFALO — The University at Buffalo women’s basketball team (3-0, 0-0 MAC) improved to 3-0 for the second straight season on Saturday afternoon as they raced past the Manhattan Jaspers at Alumni Arena, 73-39. The Bulls saw all 13 of their players record at least two points while 11 players snagged at least one rebound in the victory.

For the second straight game, the Buffalo bench stepped up in a big way as they were able to receive a season-high 49 points from their reserves. Leading the way once again was sophomore Gabi Bade who finished with 11 points and three rebounds on 3-for-4 from behind the arc. Theresa Onwuka finished off the best game of her career with nine points, three rebounds and three steals across 18 minutes while Lawrencia Moten saw action for the first time this season and netted a career-best seven points and two rebounds in seven minutes of work. Summer Hemphill continued to fill the statsheet as she netted nine points, eight rebounds and a career-high four steals in 16 minutes of action off the bench.

The Bulls came out and dominated the first quarter of play after the Jaspers opened the scoring with a pair of free throws. Trailing 2-0 with 7:51 left in the first, the Bulls went on a 17-0 run to take over the game and they never looked back. JoAnna Smith started the run with a deep three-pointer after a nice feed from Stephanie Reid and Bade finished off the run with a four-point play, drilling a three-pointer and then making the ensuing free throw after getting fouled. The Bulls closed out the first quarter leading Manhattan 21-9 as they held the Jaspers to 3-for-11 from the floor in the first 10 minutes.

Buffalo was able to put the game away in the second quarter as Bade opened the quarter with another three-pointer to make the score 24-9. After the Jaspers clawed within 13, 24-11, UB went on 12-1 run to take their biggest lead of the half, 36-12. Onwuka scored five quick points and Hemphill netted a fast break layup to finish the run for the Bulls. UB went to half owning their biggest halftime lead of the season, 40-16, while allowing a season-best seven points in the quarter to the Jaspers.

Manhattan scored the first bucket of the third quarter before the Bulls went on a 14-0 run to take their biggest lead of the game, 54-18. Smith and Katherine Ups hit back-to-back three’s before Hemphill finished off the run with a layup after an offensive rebound. The Jaspers finished off the third quarter on an 8-3 run as Liisa Ups finished a layup and Bade hit a free throw before entering the third with UB leading 57-26.

The Bulls were able to get some bench players into the game in the fourth quarter as Ayoleka Sodade notched the first layup of the quarter after a nice feed from Liisa Ups. After Courtney Wilkins drilled a three-pointer, Moten was able to record her first career bucket as she grabbed an offensive rebound and finished off the layup. Moten went on to score five straight points and seven total in the quarter as the Bulls handed the Jaspers the 34-point defeat, their largest margin of victory since Jan. 1, 2014 when they defeated Roberts Wesleyan by 35 points, 93-58.

Bade led all players with 11 points while Smith finished off her game with 10 points, four rebounds and two steals over just 20 minutes of action. Katherine Ups finished off her strong game with eight points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists while Brittany Morrison finished with four points, four rebounds and two steals in 17 minutes.

For the game, the Bulls shot 37.1% from the floor while holding their opponents to 30.4% as UB improved to 3-0 this year when shooting a higher percentage than their opponents. The Bulls defense forced 26 turnovers that they turned into 25 points while also winning the fast break category, 10-0. Buffalo continued to be strong on the glass as they owned the 48-30 edge in rebounds including 22 offensive boards that they turned into 18 second chance points.

Buffalo returns to the hardwood on Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 pm as they travel to take on the Duquesne Dukes for their first road game of the 2016-17 campaign. The Bulls fell 79-62 to the Dukes last season at Alumni Arena.
