The Canisius women’s basketball team continues its season on Sunday, as it hosts its second home game of the season, welcoming Akron to town. The squad will take on the Zips in a 2 p.m. matchup.

Canisius enters the contest with a 1-1 record, having defeated St. Bonaventure earlier in the week. The squad held the Bonnies to 18 points in the first half and used a 27-point fourth quarter to help lift the team to victory. Five different Griffs reached double-figures, with four of them starting the contest. Lauren D’Hont led the charge with 15 points, while Maria Welch and Margret Halfdanardottir had 14 each. Also reaching double figures was Saliah Serrette and Sara Hinriksdottir.

The Griffs defeated St. Bonaventure without the services of two of its key players, Sarah Cooley who was ill for the game, and Emily Weber who missed the game due to the tragic loss of her mother. Canisius got back to doing what it does best against the Bonnies, hitting 10 treys and spreading the ball around offensively. The squad made only made five against the Huskies, as Northeastern pressed the perimiter. The Griffs are averaging 66.5 points through two games, posting point totals of 59 and 74, respectively. Opponents are averaging 70 against the Griffs.

Canisius has four players either above or hovering around the double-digit point per game mark, with Maria Welch and Margret Halfdanardottir, averaging 14, and Sara Hinriksdottir (9.5) and Lauren D’Hont (9.0) on the cusp. As a team the Griffs are shooting 41.2 from the floor, while opponents are averaging 42.4 from the field. From long range the Blue and Gold have proved to be deadly as ever, shooting over 40 percent despite not shooting it at the same rate as last season. While its only two games in, Canisius has done a better job at rebounding this season, holding a -5.0 margin, averaging 35.5 boards per game. The Griffs are winning the turnover battle, averaging 11 turnovers to their opponents 12.5 mark.

Canisius is 2-3 all-time against against Akron and are currently on a two-game losing streak. The two teams first met in 1987, and the Griffs fell, 80-41. Canisius went on to win two straight in 1989 and 1990, besting the Zips in the two-game home-and-home. The two teams failed to play each other again for 22 years, picking the series back up in 2012. Canisius is 1-1 when playing Akron at home, while the Griffs are 1-2 when playing in Ohio.
